President’s Message by Barbara Macpherson
Welcome to Fall and the cooler mornings! Our annual meeting will be on Tuesday, November 8, 2022. TSB members will vote on the Board of Directors Election, approve the 2022-2023 budget, hear the president’s and TSB’s financial reports, and give member feedback to the TSB Board. According to our bylaws, all members have to pay their dues before the annual meeting in order to vote. Individuals who wish to run for the Board of Directors will have to let the President know by the October 14th board meeting so the TSB Board can approve their nomination. The TSB Board asks that all candidates need to be able to use email as many reports are delivered by that method.
After the Annual Meeting, members will enjoy a submarine sandwich lunch with pumpkin and apple pie for dessert. The Board encourages all members to attend the Annual Meeting.

Eye Talk by Annie Schlesinger – Talking Books – Part One
When I was first diagnosed with my eye disease, I was already legally blind! Eventually I started receiving NLS Talking Books. I read books about blind folks as I wanted to learn how they did it.
“The First Year” by Daniel Roberts. DB 063206, 2006. When Dan was diagnosed with macular degeneration, he retired from his teaching position. As he discovered his life wasn’t over, he wrote his book and founded MD Support, a monthly phone support group. Barbara and I belong to it. For information call 1-866-588-7747.
Stories of climbing Mount Everest fascinate me. “Touch The Top of The World” by Erik Weihenmeyer DB051505, 2001. Erik rebelled against becoming blind. He developed a passion for mountaineering. (He was even married on top of Mount Kilimanjaro!) Eric achieved his goal of climbing the Seven Summits, one of only 150 people to do so. You can also read “A Blind Man’s Journey To Kayak the Grand Canyon.” DB087291, 2017.
Rebecca Alexander wrote her story, “Not Fade Away” DB080043, 2015, which is about her gradual loss of hearing and vision. Now she’s a psychotherapist and the sister of NBC White House correspondent Peter Alexander. She lives in New York City.
These books are available on cartridge from NLS Talking Books and on BARD.
The Talking Book Library has a book club! Monthly meetings will resume in November 2022 mornings at 10:00 AM and evenings at 6:00 PM. Join by computer, web-connected devices, or by telephone. They will even call you if you prefer. Call the library for more information or to sign up. I like to discuss books and this group is very convenient. I attended the August meeting; the book was a historical novel titled Carnegie‘s Maid by Marie Benedict. I look forward to the next meeting.

How a hungry javelina destroyed a car in its quest for Cheetos in Arizona.
Brock Blasdell and KiMi Robinson, Arizona Republic.
A javelina that hunted down a bag of Cheetos accidentally locked itself inside a car in Cornville, Arizona and then put it into neutral. Here’s how the incident played out.
A wild javelina’s recent hunt in Arizona did not go according to plan. The animal – which, for the uninitiated, looks like a wild boar but is in fact its own species – can be found in central and southern Arizona and parts of Texas. The creature was successful in its pursuit of an open bag of Cheetos inside a car parked on April 6th, but its troubles started when it hopped in through the hatchback of a Subaru station wagon and accidentally locked itself inside in the process. The hungry javelina was freed safely, according to the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office. How did the javelina get stuck in the car? Deputies said the furry intruder was eyeing a bag of Cheetos that night when it jumped inside the vehicle’s hatchback which was left open overnight. The javelina lacked the stealth it showed in sneaking inside the vehicle with its attempt to get out of the car. According to the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office, the animal rocked the passenger car upon entry, causing the back entrance to close, locking it inside with its snack. Once locked inside, deputies said the javelina began feasting upon the cheese-dust-covered snack until the bag was clean. Soon after finishing, he tried to escape but had trouble leaving the vehicle.
“His attempt to exit the vehicle proved to be more cumbersome than entering,” reads the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office’s statement. “The javelina tore off a portion of the dashboard, the passenger door interior and knocked the vehicle into neutral, which caused it to roll out of the driveway and across the street until stopping under some trees. Some neighbors noticed the plight of the trapped javelina and called the authorities. “I don’t know that we’ve had a call like this before,” Heidi Howard, the sheriff’s office public affairs officer told The Arizona Republic in an email. “It’s not typically something folks will call (law enforcement) for. According to the sheriff’s office, Deputy Dickinson was called to the scene to investigate and safely opened the hatch, thus allowing the javelina to carefully jump out and run back into the wilderness.” All that it left behind was a bag of Cheetos that was licked clean. “Can you blame him? ‘Who doesn’t love a midnight Cheetos snack?
