Airline Travel
Call airline’s 800 number and ask for “Meet and Assist” when you make your reservation. Service personnel will help you change planes and take you to baggage claim. If you mention that you are visually impaired and that the reservation website is inaccessible, they will waive the $25 service fee they’d normally charge when asking for the service by phone.

Audio Description movies (Descriptive Narration)
Go to the box office of the theater to get a headset. After turning on the headset, a narrator will describe the action in the movie between the dialogue. Using the iPhone with Voice Over
There are many wonderful apps for the visually impaired user on the iPhone such as BARD Mobile to download books and magazine articles from the Arizona Talking book Library.

Hadley is a wonderful free resource filled with practical information on vision loss. A series of short workshops cover Everyday Living, Adjustment to Vision Loss, Recreation, Technology, and Braille. You need to log in to their website in order to get the information. The series on how to learn using the computer and the iPhone are very helpful. Hadley has monthly discussion groups such as Tech it Out, Travel Talk, What’s Cooking, Crafts, gardening, writing, and learning Spanish and Braille. For those without a computer, Hadley will put the information on a cartridge which can be played on an NLS Talking Book player.

AIRA a free app from the app store to help the visually impaired to do daily tasks or to know what is around them. You can use it for free under 5 minutes You can use Aira for free at Walmart, Target, Chase Bank, and at Tucson and Phoenix airports. They also have monthly plans for trained visual interpreters to help you.

BARD Mobile
Download books and magazines on the computer, iPhone, iPad, and Victor Reader Stream. Set up a user name and password with the Arizona Braille and Talking Library.

Be My Eyes App
Use for free. Sighted volunteers will read items or help you find things. Use the Be My Eyes Ai, (second tab on bottom left) to take a picture and ask an AI question. I use this app to take pictures of labels, clothes, and documents. You can share pictures by email and there is a history of you photos stored by date. You can click on specialized help where you can ask help from Google, Microsoft, and others.

Seeing AI App
It will read handwriting, and currency. The app is free. It will read short text, documents, labels, and bar codes.

Alexa Dot
After connecting to the internet and your computer or iPhone, you can listen to the news, call anyone on your contact list, find out addresses of businesses, listen to Amazon music, set timers and alarms, listen to audiobooks, hear NFB Newsline, make shopping lists, and much, much more – all by voice commands. The Echo Show 10, with a 10-inch video screen will read labels on cans using its camera. On it you can also watch free movies on its screen and much more. The Amazon Microwave and Alexa Smart Oven are both voice-controlled by any Echo device.

Audio Description
Audio Description (AD) provides a verbal narrative of key visual events added to audio tracks of video and film; the added descriptions occur during pauses in dialogue or between critical sound elements.
Turn on audio description on iPhone in Settings. You can listen to free audio described movies and television shows by going to www.audiovault.net. Save movies to file on iPhone.

iBUG today – Free Training for Android and iPhones

Voice Over Tutorials on your iPhone
For beginners on iPhones, there is a tutorial on VoiceOver, VoiceOver practice, and a free app called VO Starter. VO Starter consists of 10 lessons to learn how to use your iPhone using VoiceOver.

Three different podcasts you might want to listen to

  1. My favorite podcast is called Eyes on Success. Listen to Pete and Nancy interview blind and low vision people who have inspiriting stories. You can go to www.eyesonsuccess.net to get the podcast and the show’s notes. Another way to listen to this podcast is to use the Echo Dot and ask Alexa play ‘Eyes on Success podcast”.
  2. Hadley Presents has interesting podcasts on vision loss every two weeks hosted by Ricky Enger. You can find the podcast at www.hadleyhelps.org
  3. Podcast Unmute This podcast contains “Digital Bites” which is very handy with tip on using the iPhone. You can find this podcast at www.unmute.show
